The beacons appear to have 2 or 3 micro-LEDs on their boards. I notice that during a battery change, one of the LEDs lights up red for one second. What does this mean?

You are correct. In few hardware versions that we shipped LED diodes are present. They are not in use at the moment - red blink appears in older firmware version when beacon is booting up.
