Google discontinuing support for Nearby and Physical Web (incl. Eddystone-URL and Here & Now)

Hi everyone!

As you possibly know already, Google announced yesterday that it’s discontinuing support for Android Nearby Notifications on December 6th.

This means that features such as Google Nearby, Eddystone-URL, and Estimote Here & Now will stop working in a bit over a month. As a result, it will no longer be possible to send notifications to nearby phones without a dedicated app.

Many of you have been using these features but, unfortunately, you’ll need to look for some alternatives soon. We recommend building your own iOS and Android apps with our Proximity SDK. Such apps can display fully customizable push notifications, can work in the background and are capable of many other features - indoor navigation, asset tracking, a process automation - to name a few. Try the app templates available in the Estimote Cloud and check the detailed tutorials on Developer Docs.

If you’re not a developer and don’t currently have a budget for hiring one, there’s a number of 3rd party services such as Bleesk, Rover or Cuseum that allow you to quickly build an app without any coding.

We’ll be posting further updates about Eddystone-URL and Here & Now in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned.

Have a great weekend and if we can help with anything, drop us a note at contact@estimote.com.

Thanks,
