What is the main difference between a bluetooth connection via a beacon and wifi? Is it only that a beacon can locate you better or are there any other differences / benefits?

Estimote Beacons do not support Wi-Fi connectivity at all. The basic advantage of Bluetooth over Wi-Fi for location-based services is energy efficiency and signal accuracy.
